This week it’s time for you another episode of Rioja Paired, my new 4-part docu series about one of Spain’s most famous wine regions, Rioja. In this episode, we move to Rioja Oriental, the eastern side of Rioja and the most pristine, undiscovered part of this Spanish wine region.
In this blog, we’ll talk a little bit about how Rioja is divided into three sub-regions: Rioja Alta, Rioja Alavesa, and Rioja Oriental. Each area contributes distinct characteristics to the wines produced there, thanks to differences in geography, climate, and soil. Join me in this episode as I journey through the captivating landscapes of Rioja Oriental (Eastern Rioja), where ancient history and food and wine come together in unexpected ways. We kick things off by visiting the stunning Monasterio de Santa María de Yerga, home to some of the world's oldest written numbers—I had no idea!

What is Rioja Oriental?
Rioja Oriental, previously known as Rioja Baja, is the easternmost sub-region of the Rioja wine area, characterized by its warmer climate and varied terroirs. This region benefits from the Mediterranean climate, with hot summers and mild winters, making it ideal for producing bold, fruit-forward wines.

The primary grape varieties in Rioja Oriental include Tempranillo, Garnacha (Grenache), and some lesser-known varietals that thrive in this warm climate. The fruit-forward nature of these grapes results in wines that are rich and approachable, perfect for pairing with hearty dishes.
What Makes Rioja Oriental Wines Special?
Rioja Oriental wines tend to have a fuller body and a more pronounced fruitiness compared to their Rioja Alta counterparts. Expect flavors of ripe red fruits, spices, and a smooth texture, often enhanced by oak aging. The region is particularly known for its exceptional Garnacha, which showcases the terroir’s potential.
