Donostiarras Worlwide : Berlin City Break with Gandafro
In this tiny city of 180,000 people, there are some pretty incredibly talented folks. I'm not just talking about chefs... there is an artistic subculture here that would lend itself to years of study.
Instead of years of study, however, I am going to devote a blog, and instead of an interview or exploring San Sebastián, I am going to get these folks to recommend their favorite spots in another city.
David Mendez is a passionate photographer, an Instagram star, and also obsessed with all those countries up around Germany and Austria. So I've asked him to give me his top spots in Berlin, Germany, a place he called home for a while. For your next Berlin city breaks, you've got nothing more to do than follow his (super sage, super hip) advice. Read on as David gives us his favorite international spots in historically rich Berlin, carefully avoiding the "Mitte" and its hoardes of tourists:
1 - Biergarten "Schleusenkrug" next to the Zoo ::: I love Biergarten, nice atmosphere, a cosy place to taste German food and drink beers. This one is beautiful with trees, lightbulbs hanging, music...
2 - Pomodorino, authentic italian restaurant in Friedrichshain district ::: Really good italian food (pizza, pasta, everything), the waiters are Italian and it is not expensive.
3 - Baradero cuban restaurant ::: Amazing Cuban dishes and very good cocktails. The guys who run it are Cuban and very funny people. I went several times.
4 - The beautiful street Bergmannstrasse and the supposed best Kebab in Germany (maybe the world) ::: I loved walking Bergmannstrasse with its classical beautiful buildings, cool little shops, ice-cream shops and cafes. Then near you can find a Kebab stall in the street called Mustafa's gemüse Kebab which is supposed one of the oldest and best Kebabs. It is so famous that sometimes you have to queue for an hour to get a Kebab.
5 - The Prenzlauerberg district:::: Prenzlauerberg is a cool district which I specially liked because you can find interesting things all close together:
- Cool metro station Eberswalder Straße
- One of the best Currywurst in the city
- Kastanienallee, a cool street with shops, cafes.
- Pratergarten in Kastanienallee: The other Biergarten in town which I really liked, cool atmosphere and local people chilling out, more typical german dishes.
- Flea market and karaoke in Mauerpark on Sundays. The karaoke is so funny, people singing badly, spectators clapping...
