I am always in Bilbao. Whether it’s for a work thing, just to see the latest exhibit at the Guggenheim, a dance competition (for Buckley, duh) or the hankering for a specific pintxo, it’s such an easy trip for us that we go all the time.

On the most specialist of occasions, or when work calls, I get to stay at its ehem finer establishments. The Artist - Grand Hotel of Art is hands-down one of the city’s best hotels. Formerly known as the Gran Hotel Domine Bilbao, this five-star design hotel is elegant and its luxury understated. Most importantly, it features the best views of the iconic Guggenheim Museum.

Located in the quieter Moyúa neighborhood, the hotel’s prime spot is just steps from the Guggenheim and a 25-minute walk ( or a short tram ride away) from the lively Casco Viejo.

I absolutely love how daring (and timeless) the hotel’s design is. I mean, check out this gigantic statue in the lobby! This eye-catching towering rock sculpture pre-dates Instagram, and I love the fact that it just…exists. The rest of the hotel features original contemporary art by Javier Mariscal, complementing the Guggenheim’s modern aesthetic.

The rooms are practical with amenities like minibars and kettles, though less daring in design. My room on my last visit was practically perfect! I mean check out that suite. 100% marble bathrooms are a highlight, especially in superior rooms, which include Philippe Starck bathtubs. It is totally worth the extra charge for a Guggenheim-facing room, if this is your once-in-a-lifetime trip to Bilbao.

Let’s be real, it rains a lot in this particular destination. That’s why I am firm believer in getting a hotel with indoor activities, too. The hotel’s wellness area features a gym with views of the Guggenheim, a sauna, and spa with massage services.

One of the highlights, especially in warmer weather, is the rooftop breakfast. It’s half buffet, half menu, all in an al fresco situation that puts the museum front and center.

I really can’t get over how gorgeous these views are. Little puppy and the iberdrola tower.

The perfect place to curl up with a coffee and a book and just relax. We had such a great weekend here!
